Hospitals start receiving doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine as infections reach record high

Batches of the newly approved coronavirus vaccine from Oxford University and AstraZeneca have started arriving at hospitals as Covid-19 infections in the UK soar.

Some 530,000 doses of the vaccine will be available for rollout across the UK from Monday, with vulnerable groups already identified as the priority for immunisation.

It comes as the United Kingdom recorded 57,725 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours – the highest figure of the pandemic so far.

Tuesday’s figure of 53,135 cases was the previous highest since the pandemic began.

One of the first hospitals to take delivery of a batch on Saturday morning was the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, part of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.
